FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CALIFORNIA TRANSPLANT SERVICES INTRODUCES WIRELESS
WEB PORTAL FOR ORDERING OF HUMAN CORNEAS FOR TRANSPLANT Cardiff-by-the-Sea,
California (August 16, 2000) – Biotechnology company California Transplant
Services, Inc. (CTS), has introduced a wireless web access portal for
ordering human corneas for transplant. The
wireless website will provide physicians and surgery centers worldwide with
mobile access for the purpose of listing patients for surgery on CTS’s cornea
transplant waiting list. The site
may be accessed via NextelÒ,
AT&T Wireless®, and Sprint PCS® handsets utilizing wireless web technology
in addition PDA’s such as the Palm VII® and Palm V® with Omnisky™ modem
service. The site address is http://californiatransplant.wapmatic.de The
cornea is the outer surface of the eye that can successfully be transplanted
when the patient’s eye is damaged or affected by corneal disease.
CTS currently provides 3000 corneas a year for transplant surgery
nationwide. Corneas are recovered
from organ and tissue donors after obtaining an informed consent from the legal
next of kin. Extensive record
review, serological testing and medical/social history is obtained prior to
release for transplant. The
new WAP (wireless application protocol) site will be built in cooperation with
Peperoni Internet Solutions of Breckerfeld Germany and is operated from an
Internet server based in Germany. There
is no charge to access the site and there is no financial relationship between
the two companies. It is scheduled
to begin service in August 13, 2000. “While
many transplant programs have websites purely for information, this site will
enable the physician to place a patient on the waiting list while in transit
between the clinic and hospital, saving valuable time”, says Daryl Lirman,
Executive Director of CTS. “The
mobile phone website will be an adjunct to our existing website.” California
Transplant Services, Inc. is a California non-profit public benefit corporation
founded in 1994 to provide human tissue for transplant surgery. # # # For More Information Contact: Public Information Officer Carlsbad, California 92013-0815 USA
